CLOZEE :: Saturating melodic glitch-hop

Clozee is 21 year old Toulouse native Chloe Herry. The last year has seen releases on Gravitas Recordings and Digital Whomp showcasing a uniquely flavored style of melody driven glitch hop which has made a stir with its moving orchestral arrangements and funky off beat percussion. I caught up with Clozee on a cold winter eve after a cranking Thursday night gig on a Parisian riverboat.

Sam Waks / Igloo :: When did you get started making electronic music?

Chloe Herry / Clozee :: I was around 17 years old maybe. I was playing the guitar for 4 years, and I wanted to record my compositions. So I decided to buy a computer, a sound card, a microphone and I did some research into good software which would allow me to record my guitar parts and edit them. That’s how I discovered my first DAW, FL Studio which I’m still using now. As I was already a big fan of electronic music I naturally started adding beats, synths and saturated basslines over the top.

What kind of set up do you use? any live instruments?

Still no live instruments but I plan on bringing my guitar on stage one of these days. I’m certainly working towards it! At the moment I’m just playing with a cheap MIDI controller and my PC.

If you are still making music in 10 years what do you think it will sound like?

In 10 years… very hard to say. The speed at which music is evolving with the internet and new technologies that keep appearing with crazier and crazier functions. I think it’s impossible to see where music will lead in the coming decade. I can’t stay away from melodies so I can at least guarantee that it will always be melodic!

What would be the ultimate time and place to play a set?

Any time in a festival, like in the Red Rocks amphitheater in Colorado. It looks fucking amazing, with a crazy atmosphere.

If you could choose any vocalist in the world to do a verse on one of your tracks who would it be and why?

Maybe Jamiroquai or Stevie Wonder—a very unique and soulful voice. I would choose Michael Jackson if he was still alive: his rhythm when he’s singing is absolutely fantastic, it inspires me so much, it would fit perfectly with a Glitch-Hop track.

How did you first discover Glitch Hop as a genre and what drew you to it?

When I discovered edIT (I don’t remember how exactly, probably on YouTube) maybe in 2007, with his album Crying Over Pros for No Reason. It was so crazy, I was listening to his track “Mop Head” and I immediately fell in love with his style. Later I discovered his new sick album Certified Air Raid Material which was classified as Glitch-Hop for the style. It made me want to start producing Glitch-Hop .

Which musicians inspire you?

Too many awesome artists who inspire me, but my main masters are edIT, The Flashbulb, Opiuo, Amon Tobin, Jon Hopkins, mr. carmack, The Glitch Mob, The Widdler, Flume, Gramatik, Amestub, Pretty Lights, Cashmere Cat…

Plans for 2014?

Too much fun: a new EP called Inner Peace which will be out in March (2014) on Glitch Hop Community, a lot of new remixes (free remixes or for remix competitions), a lot of collaborations and some live dates are already confirmed.
