Versalife :: Vantage Point (Clone West Coast Series)

Chilly atmo twiddle, electro squiggle and rhythmic shtick abound in an machine-mean pristine update of a hark-back to the sound of Drexciya.

conforceMulti-monikered Boris Bunnik is back, here as Versalife, his more electro-techno ID. He follows Night Time Activities, a series of 12”s on Clone West Coast Series with Vantage Point, a vaguely dystopian LP inspired, seemingly, by the horizons and emptiness of his home lands in Friesland. Cover art – by fellow Frisian, Robert Zandvliet—across digipack front’n’back ‘symbolizes perfectly the rhythm of the open spaces in Friesland,’ Clone says ‘…especially in the whitened more abstract and cold winter landscape thats almost synonym for Versalife’s abstract ice cold electro techno.’

The Dutchman best known for high-spec techno as Conforce was last sighted on igloomag in more abstract experimental ambient dub guise as Silent Harbour. And Boris has been a busy boy indeed in the past 4 years, with not only two Conforce LPs and a bunch of EPs on Delsin—one of which, Time Dilation, still warm, but also, via his lately unveiled vinyl-only label, Transcendent, another transmission from under yet another moniker, Hexagon. But, back to Versalife… chilly atmo twiddle, electro squiggle and rhythmic shtick abound in an machine-mean pristine update of a hark-back to the sound of Drexciya. Last word to the man himself: The record is pure self-reflection. The presence of frustration and cynicism is strong on the album. It’s a reflection of my imagination… The total vibe of Vantage Point is part of a sound research period. It’s more claustrophobic and morbid than the Night Time Activities series. For me the album is a cinematic experience and every track is a chain in that journey’ (Boris Bunnik)

Vantage Point is available on Clone West Coast Series. [ Vinyl | CD ]
