diametric. opens 2013 with a new vinyl release. Following a productive 2012, Arne Weinberg’s label introduces a new name to the catalogue; John Shima. To date, Sheffield based Shima has focused on digital releases but has now been given wax life with the Apoapis EP.

Shima immediately sets the listener off an astral journey. “Insane” sends beams into the stratosphere, muted bleeps and clicks bounced off space debris and weighted with steady pulses. “Glitch” takes its cue from the sounds of late 90s electronica in an almost beatless piece of soulful abstraction. The influence of the UK sound courses through Shima’s material, “Digal001” harking back to the melodies of Beaumont Hannant and The Black Dog. “Rhd” closes the EP. The ultimate piece is a refracted work, a spirited piece of mechanical processes of a computer age.

From the outset, Apoapis maps an introspective and involving musical vision. Shima draws on the history of British electronics, adopting techno and electronica into his cerebral sound. Strong and engaging sounds for the Sheffielder’s vinyl outing.
