This release is excellent on its own, but with so little material, it almost feels like something you’d listen to in anticipation of the next Vijunns release. Given how great the music on 1991 is, I certainly hope there’s more to come soon.

Get in line for whatever Vijunns does next
Just last year, Vijunns (aka LA-based music producer and art director Jeremy Raskin) released his first record for Hyperreal Projects, and 1991 is—I assume—a bit of an appetizer for more things to come. Though listed as an EP, this release is shorter than most extended players you’ll come across, playing more like a single with an A-side and a B-side. It consists only of the title track and the brief follow-up, “Void,” which is a sweet ambient piece.
The real highlight is definitely “1991,” though, as it’s very likely to end up as one of my favorite tracks of the year. It’s a modern IDM tune with a heavy bass presence, and the drums are fantastic—bombastic yet exceptionally clean. The piece is also highly layered, featuring a couple of really nice hooks that take turns carrying the track and keeping it fresh. The first is the lead synth melody introduced early on, while a second refrain later emerges as an arpeggiated lead; both are incredibly catchy. There’s also a nice breakdown in the middle and a sweet climax toward the end—it nails every element.
This release is excellent on its own, but with so little material, it almost feels like something you’d listen to in anticipation of the next Vijunns release. Given how great the music on 1991 is, I certainly hope there’s more to come soon. If I were you, I’d absolutely check out 1991 and get in line for whatever Vijunns does next.
