Not necessarily a Squarepusher, Music Is Rotted One Note (Warp) take-off, but the moods reflected within Baretta’s new full length with Emanate share’s some of those jazzier qualities. No frantic drum and bass elements on this release with Emanate, but rather a relaxed, pensive, and visually pleasing release. The artwork deserves just as much credit as the work itself.. a colorful platform of deep colors collide into each other with what seems like a seringe casually pinching an electronic machine with color pigments.
Jeff Allen (who runs the Sprout/Hydrant record label with Doug Eisengrein ) has recently moved from San Francisco back to Brooklyn) and on his latest full length, it’s a marvel that he can create such a focused album without veering into the experimental end of the spectrum as he has with projects on Sprout/Hydrant. Instead, an instrumentally functional full length of thoughtful electronic music is displayed for open ears to consume. While at times Velvet Brick feels rather bland, there are many moments that are constructed in such a way that you can’t help but feel the energy coming out of these jazzy-infused tracks.
