Metamatics :: Rewired In My Manor (Hydrogen Dukebox, CD)

472 image 1The idea first formed on the forum of Lee’s own Neo Ouija website where strands of the tracks were sent out to friends for remixing or remodeling into each artists own interpretation. Rewired In My Manor is without doubt the most eclectic and varied of the three remix compilations – even more surprising given the fact that, with only two exceptions, all of the tracks are reworkings of a single unreleased track entitled “Pod.”

The album works on so many levels: as a celebration of and homage to the inspired and distinguished work of Lee Norris; as a prime example of how inspiration from one track can affect the work of many different artists in many different ways; as an excellent spring-board from which to jump into and explore the work of some of the extraordinarily gifted artists who remodel Lee’s work here, and as a wonderfully varied and rich compilation.

Very few albums come immediately to mind that feature such a strong and beautiful opening as Rewired In My Manor has. “Rewired ByYasume/Dentosen” is a collaboratory remix by Xela (John Twells who has recently released his debut full-length on Neo Ouija) and Logreybeam under the collective guise, Yasume. Rarely have electronic crackles, pops and interference been fused so effectively with such emotionally charged, luscious and evocative melodies. The result is quite possibly one of the most outstanding tracks of 2003. This is a collaborative force without par – look out for their forthcoming album on City Centre Offices as it promises to be one of the albums of the year.

Following on from that is the second of the highlights of this album… a beautiful reworking of “Days Are Gone” by Verbose (who has a new album, Observe due for release on Neo Ouija in November/2003). Allan Richmond has an amazing talent for weaving together affecting melody and resonant, glittering sound that is presented beautifully in this haunting, melancholy remix. There is a magnificent, though sadly edited rewire by Bauri. Those familiar with his work (on Neo Ouija, De:Bug, U_Cover and many other labels) will recognise his trademark elongated and minimal approach to music alongside the most delicate, eerie and ever evolving melodies you’re likely to hear. Bauri again expertly builds up the atmosphere, layer by layer, before heart wrenching decomposing it until mere whispers remain. Simply wonderful. Other highlights include Kettel’s eccentric and quite manic rewire stacked with his trademark skittering and complex melodies, Stars As Eyes’ heavily
textured “AlotmentDefender” rewire split into three quite distinct and richly layered sections, and Sleepy Town Manufacture’s ultra-deep, warm, atmospheric but uptempo rewire.

A unique experience in every way, Rewired In My Manor is worth buying for the first two tracks alone and a fitting tribute to the released works of Metamatics.
