Having previously released the Horses and Chariots and Civil Symmetry 12″ singles on Ersatz Audio, Ron Zakrin – aka Goudron – has released his debut album for the label. Recorded using vintage analogue gear modified by Zakrin himself to generate the sounds he wanted, his involvement also extends the design of the cover artwork. The album is released on CD only and includes 5 tracks from the preceding 2 12″ singles and a collection of tracks selected from a possible 30 recorded over a 2 year period, essentially making Raw Voltage a “best of” collection.

Hugely positive and energetic, Raw Voltage bears the Detroit influence throughout but updates and fuses that sound with alternative credibility and electro pop optimism. “Machina Mundi” for example has driving techno quality but at the same time is underpinned with a haunting layer of swirling synths. In comparison, “Run” shows all the signs of being an instant classic with its dark undercurrent, undeniable positivity and addictive familiarity. On the odd occasion where Zakrin exercises his vocal talent, his delivery is an ideal match to the mood of the music, as with the new wave electro-pop of “Frontline” for example. Closing the album is the sombre “Tired” where Zakrin recites everything he is tired of over a buzzing drone and simple melody, ultimately signing off on a more optimistic note.

Unashamedly upbeat and full of momentum, Raw Voltage bears all the typical Ersatz Audio trademarks; cool retro chic and attitude aligned with modern electronic sensibilities resulting in a hybrid of the best of the 2 genres, a characteristic Ersatz are well versed in recognising.

Raw Voltage is out now on Ersatz Audio.
