There’s something just a bit more polished on Phylum Sinter’s latest outing; the sparks and sputtering soundscapes on SLEEEEB are brighter—just have a listen to “Wilt Nostalgia” showcasing how much can be accomplished in such a short timeframe. Detroit-based Chris Todd has been at his craft for several years, venturing through an amalgam of dark and crunchy electronics, yet with this collection we see the artist lighten things up.
“The Pendulum Swings” provides just enough fluttering synths and melodic juggling to keep us afloat as “Tom Cruise Missile” bounces a myriad of funky rhythms and thudding percussion. The multi-talented Milieu mixes “A Purpler Soup” and gives IDM a bubbling booster as its sun-soaked charm and Casino vs Japan stylings are saturated. As these relatively short tracks buzz and flicker their lightwaves, “Hello Raspy,” stands out for its downtrodden ambient electronica ebb and flow as shuffling glitch elements sizzle in the background.
An uplifting album that charts a path across shinier electronic noodling that artists like Plaid, Ochre, and Kettel continue to churn out release after release. Let the slow-motion minimal techno-shrubbery of “Slonn” whisk you away as Phylum Sinter takes ahold of the steering wheel and doesn’t let go.
