Spanning 54 minutes over 8 tracks, this Washington, USA native’s debut album kicks off a re-launch of the UK’s em:t label. This release has an overall sound and feel similar to that of Future Sounds of London or The Orb. All of the tracks tend to follow the same pattern of building up from an atmospheric pad sound and tend to have an overall atmospheric bend to them as well. Track 5, “Numby Numb,” being the non sequitur and instead sounding very Squarepusher inspired –but seeing as how it comes in the middle of the album it might’ve been intended as a sort of intermission. The album has a healthy smattering of kitsch samples that aren’t narrative enough to be in a Godspeed You Black Emperor song, but do give a certain continuity to the tracks. It’s a good release, and for anyone interested in giving the artist a test-drive, you can find a lot of audio (including unreleased tracks, live
recordings and edit versions of album tracks) on Gel-Sol’s website.

Gel-Sol1104 is out now on em:t Records.
