(03.07.05) You can’t go wrong if you start a compilation with Venetian Snares. But you can’t build a solid compilation only by choosing big names, you must pick the best tunes from everyone, whether it’s an underground superstar or a novice. Invasion From XXX Dimension is such a comp, the average quality of the tracks is very high, it’s probably the best breakcore collection I’ve heard in recent times among the several released in the last year or so.

Some tunes are unbelievably good: Dev/null, hot on the heels from his Tigerbeat6 EP, delivers a mega rave blast with catchy hardcore riffs ready to cause havoc on any floor. Another TB6 star Drop The Lime, with his debut album out now, mixes drum’n’bass beats with funny samples to set up a “Tarentella Mega.” Duran Duran Duran has just released an album too and recevied a lot of good reviews, and will receive more props for his angry gabberoid “Hairmetal.” Other artists playing with hardcore gabber four to the floor kicks are Doormouse and I:Gor, while Krumble, Electric Kettle and Electromeca turn towards breakcore jungle territories. Toecutter chops up a ludicrous amount of samples to create a maxi mash up, Rotator calms down a bit from his usual style and serves a beautiful blend of obscure dub, metal riffs and digitalized breaks. The absolute newcomer Jere, discovered by PeaceOff / Damage / Bang-a-rang / Mutant Sniper heads, shows his skill with the blunted dub of “Dubjere,” an excellent presentation.

For me, Xanopticon represents the best moment on here with his frantic and screeching assault on “Stormtower,” but everyone here can find his favourite tune, there’s too much good material. For fans of Otto Von Schirach and Terminal11 –there’s stuff for you too. At the moment Invasion From XXX Dimension is available only in CD format (the vinyl addicts will have to wait until April).

Invasion From XXX Dimension is out now on Mutant Sniper Adventure.
