Thin Films :: Half Naked EP (Thin, CD)

(04.03.05) Half Naked is the second release from Thin Films, a pseudonym for Dan McRae out of
the United Kingdom. With this release, McRae realizes his namesake, as the title
track serves as the soundtrack to a short independent film of the same name.

The tracks, although clearly electronic, exude a musical and emotional depth rarely
found in other genre efforts. The title track begins with a soft piano sequence,
which quickly builds into a beautifully urgent tune without heavily increasing the
pace. “At 12AM We Lock the Doors” is the only track with a vocal component, as a
man (possibly McRae) relays the events of his day on top of a haunting urban
backdrop. “Inside” presents an somber, introspective melody that touches the soul.
“Reason to Live,” while maintaining the pace set
by the previous track, instead moves in an uplifting direction for its short
duration. Finally, “Half Naked (Red Light mix)” holds to electronic remix
standards, as it shares no recognizable components with its original counterpart;
frenetic and forceful, it still integrates the melodic presence that permeates the
entire release.

Although the tracks seem more a collection of individual efforts than a coherent
release, the individual tracks on Half Naked are each of high quality. The tracks
are all very accessible, yet they still challenge the senses with their underlying
complexity. This release is highly recommended for anyone that loves music.

Half Naked EP is out now on Thin Films.
