Morphology :: Zirkon Affair (Diametric)

The stripped down, parred back, undiluted sound of real electro is at the core of Morphology. But there is an element of soul embedded within.

Morphology 'Zirkon Affair'

Morphology are a duo who have the midas touch. Whatever these Finns turn their hand to seems to turn to gold. From their material on Abstract Minds and album on Zyntax Motorcity to recent remixes on X0X these guys have an electro mastery. They have not gone unnoticed, with Glasgow based Diametric getting the pair on board for their latest 12”: Zircon Affair.

The record opens with the title piece; sharp edged electro spills over, cross sectioned with crisp beats and dark undertones. The track builds on the Morphology sound, creating complex structures with minimal tools. “Lcross” moves down a similar line. Squelching chords take center stage as sounds shift and divide enveloped in clean snares. Morphology’s work has a Der Zyklus or Frustrated Funk quality to it, leaning away from some of the more clinical notes of electro and into the deeper melodious constructs. The flipside “Magellan Probe” introduces a bit of muscle with its analogue stabs and arching chords. “Convince the Computer” brings the EP to a close. The darker moods underlying Zircon Affair come to a head in this sinister piece of binary encrypted electro.

Few artists are putting out electro that is actually electro. Morphology are an electro outfit, and they are very good at what they do. The stripped down, parred back, undiluted sound of real electro is at the core of Morphology. But there is an element of soul embedded within. This is not mere hard clinical sounds, but clever and complex landscapes.

Zircon Affair is out now on Diametric.
