Morphology :: Landform EP (diametric.)

The pair have served up some cold and sepulchral Electro in their time, but here Turunen and Diekmann have a much more Mediterranean disposition. The Scandinavian winds are present, but there is a warm breeze running throughout.

Morphology are quietly becoming a central name in Electro. The Finnish twosome of Matti Turunen and Michael Diekmann have been propagating their sound on labels such as Semantica, AC Records and diametric.. It is to Arne Weinberg’s imprint that the duo return for their latest EP: Landform.

The four tracker builds on Morphology’s existing catalogue of terse Electro and deep Techno. “Moebius Strip” sets the tone of the record in fine form. The track combines the coldness of Electro with a budding Techno warmth. Icicle like keys are doubled with autumnal undercurrents and sturdy beats for a superb heady piece of electronics. “Landform” sees Winter arrive early as skies darken and industrial influences arrive. A gritty and metallic piece but the duo add another layer of depth with a stalking harmony. “Herschel Crater” sees the Finns in pure Electro form. Tempos are up with corrosive beats pinging off pistons and walls. “Phosphates” closes, seeing a return to some of the lilting UK Techno style backdrop that pervaded the A-Side. The finale is the most gentle of the EP, light snaps enveloped in analogue haze. A beautiful curtain fall.

Landform is an interesting EP in the Morphology catalogue. The pair have served up some cold and sepulchral Electro in their time, but here Turunen and Diekmann have a much more Mediterranean disposition. The Scandinavian winds are present, but there is a warm breeze running throughout. An element of Diekmann’s outings as CRC is present on the record, an IDM influence ghosting through three of the four. Moody and dark but also atmospheric and uplifting—a complex formula expertly delivered.
