Momentform & Kartei :: Double review (W.T. Records)

W.T. Records closes a productive 2011 with two débutantes,

First up are France’s Momentform with their self titled EP. Momentform is Fake breaks the silence with a slow piece of synth wave. Intelligent structures weave as strings add another dimension to the synths. “Selected Works” is an electro wave powerhouse from the get go. Vocals slice through the reverberations in this excellent piece. Momentform have a modern slant throughout, but one grounded in the synth wave and minimal pop sounds of the past. There is a forlorn quality running across some of the pieces, such as the solemn “Turnaround.” The other side of the coin is the poppier electro wave pieces, as in “She Is Into Clubs.” The EP runs out with “25,” a slow emotive work.

Kartei follow with Lichtgarten. The title track opens with analogue richness. The track has a wonderful arpeggiated mood, echoing the sounds of Legowelt. “Rocket to Earth” follows along similar lines, a decent beat slicing through. The sound throws up comparisons with Crème Organization’s early electro disco tones. “Dimension 11” injects some dubbier atmospherics into the record before analogue chords return for the simple warmth of “1866 Sisyphus.”

Willie Burns has a knack for picking out quality. W.T. explores a number of styles, functional house , modern synth-wave and beyond. Momentform have a contemporary electro wave guise, investigating some of the lighter and darker aspects of the sound. Kartei run along similar lines to the West Coast Netherlanders, deep analogue sounds that cleverly explore avenues. Two solid additions to the W.T. roster.

Both releases are available on W.T. Records.
