J.T.C. :: The Controller (MinimalRome)

Splitting beats and shredding sounds, he has contorted the genetic make-up of house to produce weird and wonderful beasts.

Summer is here and MinimalRome are soaking up the Italian sun. But music is never far away from the minds of Broken Pots Hill. Following James.T.Cotton’s successful debut on MRX the Ghostly, Crème and Nation artist returns to Italy for a second installment: The Controller.

Mr Cotton occupies the A-Side of this 250 copy release. A walloping beat bawdily begins with Cotton slowly introducing hi-hats and chords. A warbling melody slithers between the steady pulses. The track is bulging with muscle and is bound to fill a floor. Curiously, this is much more techno centric than much of Cotton’s other work. The corrective snares of house are present, but the bass and driving sounds come from the techno tradition. Germany’s Mick Wills is drafted in on remix duty for the B-side. Wills comes at the original with the same energy as Cotton, but the house elements are more pronounced. 808 snaps mingle with a sinister and haunting melody whilst drums pervade. Powerful stuff from this seasoned remixer.

J.T.C. has been at the forefront of Jak since the term was coined. Splitting beats and shredding sounds, he has contorted the genetic make-up of house to produce weird and wonderful beasts. For The Controller the Jak sound has taken a sideline. Techno is the product, and one of the first times I’ve heard him attempt it; and succeed at it. Wills maintains the strength of the original and adds his own unmistakable element. A record that will fill some floors, and one that might usher in a new sound for J.T.C.
