Der Noir :: Blue (Love Blast/Subsound)

Blue depicts that line between elation and melancholy, expanding the boundary dividing these emotions to produce a superb piece of electronics.

Der Noir :: Blue

I first came across Der Noir way back when. Well, maybe not way back but when they a remix project of their work came out on Minimal Rome. Little did I know that I’d be covering their music three years later, nor that Luciano Lamanna was part of the group.

Known for much more of dark techno lean Lamanna is a member of this three man cold wave outfit with Manuel Mazzenga and Manuele Frau. Their latest crosses the border between synth and the toughened edge of Lunar Lodge moving into the realm of a sweet and softened techno sound.

Blue, a release by Love Blast and Subsound, is a two track offering. The original occupies the A. Moody, deep and soulful the work is cast in the mould of the 90s. Rich and warming chords circle, pads keeping time before spiky percussion is layered atop. Memories of IDM flood back as “Blue” ebbs and flows. At ten minutes you’re in for a bit of a journey, but one of calming bars and ambient undertones. The flip is given over to Giorgio Gigli. The Zooloft co-founder emboldens the original with heavy rhythms. A 4/4 thump is the structure from which Der Noir’s version echoes. The track is wonderfully sympathetic, adding extra muscle but keeping that achingly emotive melody.

This latest release marks a shift in sound and style for both Der Noir and Love Blast. Instead of darker ambient sounds the release is more upbeat. There is a sorrow in here but not one steeped in sadness. Blue depicts that line between elation and melancholy, expanding the boundary dividing these emotions to produce a superb piece of electronics.

Blue is available on Love Blast/Subsound.
