There’s a fidgety, percussive charge running through WONKS’ Shadow Tactics, a set of four tightly engineered pieces that probe the mechanics of funk from the inside out. It opens with “ReCreation,” where rhythmic structure takes precedence—patterns interlock, fracture, and reset with deliberate precision. “Telekom” follows in a more stripped configuration, its skeletal downtempo frame and electro textures threading through breakbeat layers, guided by a probing low-end and a quietly insistent pulse.

The EP’s core tension lies in its restraint. On “Rogue,” WONKS pares things back further: a corroded beat flickers and shuffles, animated by fine-grain glitch detail that reveals itself incrementally rather than all at once. By contrast, “Volts” leans into motion, its fractured percussion gaining autonomy, pushing forward while melodic traces hover just beneath the surface of an undulating rhythm. Closing track “Itopian” eases into a slower, more diffuse space, where ambient-electro elements stretch and contract in a kind of controlled drift. Vocal fragments and abstract modulation fold into a crunching, off-kilter groove that nods toward leftfield funk without settling into it.
