Vica Pacheco returns with her sophomore album Fibre-Fusion on Wabi-Sabi Tapes. A sonic exploration into various percussive and live elements, with an experimental electro-acoustic edge. Hailing from Mexico and currently based in Brussels, Pacheco takes us on an excursion through moments that haunt, whilst displaying fragility within her performances.
The soundscape throughout is layered gently, giving a full frequency scope of surrounding rhythmic swings as the percussion pops and tantalizes the nerves. Only then to combine with harmonious, yet disconcerting hums and chants. Transitioning from tracks “Niebla,” to “Guateque,” and then “Las Manos,” probably shines best in this example, as she calculatingly pulls you through a heart-pacing dream from one side of this dreamlike landscape to the other. Within this narrative one drifts from the ideals of safety, to fighting the itch to look over your shoulder as the environment around you evolves. Leering shadows ever in contention with the hope that luminescence brings.
Don’t feel like you have to enter in a prepared state to enjoy this album. Simply let the meditative moments wash over you, as the electro-acoustic “El Fuego,” introduces the journey. Finishing the narrative with “Xóchitl,” the album slips away into a fused ambient soundscape that aides with contemplation as you finish the voyage. Overall a delicate but meticulously thought-out piece of work.
Wabi-Sabi Tapes is a label based out of Lyon, France and this is their 5th release since the label launched in April, 2020—their credo “Transient creations looking for balance in uncommon spaces” matches this release perfectly.
