Sonority #1 is the first release from a new Arret Arret label based in Belgium. It is a split between three relatively unknown artists: Mik Prims, Akihiro Kubota and Thanos Chrysakis. They all sound unique but still have a similar approach to their sound. Mik Prims contributes 8 shorter tracks and is concerned with careful shaping of smaller sounds; little harmless glitches, peaceful noises and hisses –calm but experimental and edgy. Akihiro Kubota’s tracks are also minimal and made with precision. There is an obvious amount of improvisation in this music, in the way of the respected and fascinating Japanese improvisers for instance. The last piece, a silent drone aesthetic, is an 18-minute composition created by Thanos Chrysakis called “Ecsahnoseis.”
The music on Sonority #1 is a great example of modern minimalism, done in a very mature and justified way. Excellent music for fans of some of forward-thinking music coming from labels like Raster Noton, Mego, 12k, Improvised music from Japan.
