Sparse electronic composition and minimal techno fractures
A fine line is cut between sparse electronic composition and minimal techno fractures, and USRNM (aka Stuart Bowditch) manages to seamlessly meld both together on Mspriints for Rednetic Recordings. Somewhere buried in a myriad of translucent techno patterns, it’s the minimal trajectory that USRNM inhabits so efficiently that takes a front seat. Whereas previous outings like 23 (Courier Sound, 2020) were infused with dub-laden and textured clicks, Mspriints takes a more direct approach. As fluid layers build up and break down, there are bumpier moments of brittle and bass-entangled highlights that tend to expand as the album progresses from its orbiting introduction to more floor-centric electronic acrobatics midway through. Bowditch tells a story, one that draws you into its mysticism and abstraction only to let you fall into the abyss of its closing track. A stripped down vessel of melodic techno shards are skeletal in their appearance and gain momentum with a distinctive punch along the way.
