DJ Brotha P Touch is none other than recording artist Lesser, who has released on various labels including Fatcat, and was recently a touring member for Matmos. Lesser is no stranger to wackiness, having just recently released a twelve hour MP3-packed CD including ten years of his work. Here he has cut and pasted an hours worth of Commodore64 SID tunes into an almost seamless mix, overlaying some DSP tricks and the like to ease the marvellously grating and crude waverforms of the 6581 sound chip. The fact that the majority of the tunes are actually done by C64 scene artists rather than Mr. Lesser himself, lessens the impact of the release somewhat, as does the fact that the mix is one sixty minute continuous track, meaning you can’t skip the dodgy bits.
Stylistically we jump from cheesey techno, to boppy electro, and moody game-like themes, and even a cover of Van Halen’s “Jump”. The choice and flow of tracks, whilst always upbeat and capable of moving asses, falls a little flat just after half way, with things getting a little more throwaway. If you are a fan of Commodore64 music or retro video games in general, this disc is well worth picking up, but in all honesty check the web for an abundance of free SID mixes that are more comprehensive.
