(05.11.05) Drop The Lime dropped a huge amount of vinyl releases in the last year or so, most of them were absolutely killers, and he quickly reached the status of underground superstar, with the help of exciting live sets. Now comes his debut album on Tigerbeat6, This Means Forever, that could disappoint the more hardcore fans, because there are plenty of vocals and even some melodies and downtempo tracks that you may appreciate.
This Means Forever –only if you have a good sense of humor, and don’t take DTL too seriously. When he sings ballads, I assume he’s doing a parody and so I enjoy the funny side of the artist, otherwise if one wonders why is he singing? he’s not that good –he should shut up… then he’s going to throw the CD out of the window. Just to reassure the reader, DTL’s music has not changed much, this album offers many breakcore tunes, speedy and twisted as you expect from Luca Venezia: some examples are “Hushhushdance,” “Never, Nah” and “Topolino,” that are as infectious as the tunes released on 333 Records and Ambush, the very best stuff produced by DTL. Other tracks are equally effective for me, but they feature some singing, screaming or bizarre sampling: “Glassy Eyes” sees the collaboration with a female singer Minty and it’s a masterpiece in my opinion, “Soundboy” and “Shaken” are full of Luca’s vocals laid on furious breaks, and finally “Amrcrd Gold” has some Fellini samples in it. Fans of pure breakcore will probably skip the relaxing and mellow “Dubbio” and “Driveaway Hiders,” but I think they help the whole album to flow and not to be just a collection of tunes. That said, I would have liked more drilling stuff in addition to these 17 pieces, but I’m sure there will be more material soon, this guy is young and quite prolific.
This Means Forever is out now on Tigerbeat6.
