The landscape bursting out of the speakers is turbulent and incendiary, soaked in a threatening mist. An unidentified mass, an unstoppable throbbing force on its way to devour universes.

I love the winter. It’s my favorite time of the year. When the days are getting colder and the clouds darker, I’m starting to wait for that perfect winter album to appear. An album that will warm me up on a mid-week stormy night, an album that will intensify an after-the-rain afternoon during a cozy, dreamy Saturday.

The autumn ghost almost finished whispering and winter already started to show gentle signs again. Unfortunately, I haven’t found my winter pearl just yet, but there’s still time. However, I did find something else, a dark, nocturnal companion for the frantic days of winter. A positively savage sonic entity called A Sun Spinning Backwards.

The landscape bursting out of the speakers is turbulent and incendiary, soaked in a threatening mist. An unidentified mass, an unstoppable throbbing force on its way to devour universes. Dirty, magnetizing guitar lines and showers roll on while fierce piano impacts cut through the mist from above, sometimes aggressively, sometimes creepily. The heavy bass roars and twists from beneath; relentless furious drums usually lead the way. Occasionally, abstract chants and whispers cast a spell from the black unknown depths, and at times a spaced-out electronic stream undulates or swirls. Within this stirring, luminous darkness, sometimes, for a few moments, things calm down a bit and a ray of hope appears.

A Sun Spinning Backwards is Australia-based Terminal Sound System’s third release for the German imprint Denovali, and eleventh in total. The album features a quite individual mixture of post-rock, electronic, doom and space rock. The vibe is experimental and fresh. The sound is raw and grimy, but not too grimy. An examining look at the artwork of the album will reveal more details, and that is the case with the music as well. Listen closely, and the more you’ll listen the more you’ll get sucked into the intense world of Terminal Sound System.

A Sun Spinning Backwards is available on Denovali.
