(Elena and Vladislav wanted to be even more independent so they released Time & Space as a first release on their new Syntetika Records label. There are also some more releases planned by other upcoming artists from St. Petersburg.)

The most obvious difference between both albums from Syntetika is that the new one is obviously closer to the more classic ambient-space sound, also typical for some of the known composers of the more serious and (not so) new-school ambient music like Steve Roach, Vidna Obmana, Robert Rich, Brannan Lane etc. The basic sound of Time & Space is the atmospheric elements that are simply layered with aqua-spheres, additional use of sitar and piano; simple music that’s in a way expected even from the simplicity of the track-titles: “Deep Blue Ocean,” “Memories,” “Atmosphere Breath” and so forth. Their first 100% Syntetika album was definitely a groundbreaking record for this Russian duo, perhaps due to their melodic electronic sensibilities, Syntetika managed to achieve the same depth in sound like The Future Sound of London or The Orb (without using too many sound variations). On their second album, the creative sound-escapes and experimental elements are slightly reduced, but the overall structures are quite solid.

There is still one thing that’s characteristic about Syntetika, however, and that’s the presence of a personality in their music. Unlike some of the faceless ambient music around, Syntetika’s music is very much personal and recognizable. They are not pure ambient specialists and let’s hope they’ll never become just that. So far 100% Syntetika is the more esoteric album and Time & Space is the more classic one. It’ll definitely be interesting to see what Syntetika does with their organic music in the future. As one of the world’s leading post ambient-electronic artists, it will also be intriguing to follow the growth of Syntetika Records.
