Subskan :: Drawback (Hymen)

Drawback presents a dynamic whirlwind of industrialized glitch and atmospheric swells yet manages to simultaneously erupt into a cataclysmic beauty. Corrosive electronics blend into sublime symphonies of destruction while Subskan deliveries yet another definitive musical chapter for Hymen.

Where Ambidextrous Asylums (Hymen, 2017) “performed a heroic celebration of industrial production—and then narrates its post-modern obliteration,” Drawback culls similar dark trajectories among its dozen tracks spread over one hour. Here we see Jean-Marc Polet’s third full-length fluctuate between arcane digital manipulations to fluid dark-electronic spectrums. Just have a listen to “Absconding Disclosures” where a muddy bassline segues through acidic streams of consciousness. And this is where Subskan really elevates his signature—the larger-than-life shadows cast by these twelve esoteric constructions are both dense and transparent. Yet there’s a clinical mood shifting on “Frozen Embryos” where glitch-laden DSP-strands break down into hundreds of bits and pieces as an undulating ambient fog floats into the unknown. Elsewhere you’ll find chugging rhythms and eroded beats on “Incisal Thumps” moving into downtempo terrain with raw emotional power. “Stuck” starts its journey through erratic drum acrobatics before delving full-force into a sentimental and layered melodic epic. Drawback presents a dynamic whirlwind of industrialized glitch (ie. “Cellular Echoes”) and atmospheric swells (ie. “Modus Ponens”) yet manages to simultaneously erupt into a cataclysmic beauty. Corrosive electronics blend into sublime symphonies of destruction while Subskan deliveries yet another definitive musical chapter for Hymen.
