An unlikely pairing of North and South, but a definite winner.
Just before the new year was rang in Endless Illusion put out there third vinyl release. The Prague imprint impressed with CCO’s Space Race and is following the acid tainted line laid down by the Swiss man with a split 12”.
Stephen Lopkin is a new name for me, but a quick scout through his discogs and soundcloud show that the Glaswegian means business. With records for M>O>S, Bokhari and most recently Raw Tools it’s clear that a purple patch of recognition has been found. Lopkin has obviously had a good schooling from a city steeped in electronic music. His two servings, “INC” and “Roland 6,” take on the mantles of house and techno with the second helping being soaked in a heady mix of Detroit and British styles.
I’ve had the pleasure of covering DimDJ before. The Greek artist comes at his craft with a 303 slant and the trademark gurgle of that silver box orbits his side. Both tracks, “Day 5” and “Grave Roll” comes from the traditions of house. Claps, rumbling rhythms, but there is a techno cross over in the compositions. Sweetened strings unfurl themselves in each
Endless Illusion have hit 2016 running with this split EP. Lopkin may be new to my ears but he’s made an impression and more importantly a positive one. Measured electronics with a subtlety of style that few achieve. DimDJ further proves his abilities with two tracks of accomplished analogue music. An unlikely pairing of North and South, but a definite winner.
Split EP is available on Endless Illusion.
