Stephen Hummel :: Consumed (Self Released)

A beat-heavy array of bumpier electronic mayhem, maneuvering through glitch mechanics.

Consuming the entire landscape

Broken beats for a better tomorrow, indeed. The prolific West Coast of Canada producer Stephen Hummel (aka SubtractiveLAD) revealed Consumed in May 2022—a beat-heavy collection of bumpier electronic mayhem; maneuvering through glitch mechanics right from the onset with “Heavy Things.” The style in which Hummel offers his unique rhythms is engulfing. Just have a listen to the drums on “Your Own Good” that are simply baffling as the track eventually breaks apart into nostalgic gauzy synth noodling.

And yet as Consumed basically consumes the entire landscape, tracks like “Her Synthetic Link” provide just enough emotive crunch and downtempo glitch slabs that crack under its own immense pressure. There are fleeting soundscapes bending and morphing into braindance reflections (ref. “Vicious Circle”) as the closing title track feels like an avalanche of all that’s come before—a signature ending that blends industrial noisescapes and shape-shifting melodic shards into a smorgasbord of exploratory electronics we’re always enthusiastic about.

Consumed is available on Bandcamp.
