Somaticae :: Présent Perpétuel EP (3OP)

All short pieces and utterly to the point, these brief soundscapes tend to levitate across a broad sonic spectrum where punchy percussive jolts and stabbing rhythms unfold at multiple angles.

Ethereal sound designs and low-end elect-robotics

Right from the onset you can tell Somaticae (aka Amédée De Murcia) is a skilled audio craftsman. It’s only after listening to this extended player a couple times do I learn from reading the liner notes that the multi-talented Saint-Etienne-based musician has been at for quite a while—unsurprisingly. As a long-time exp-electronics aficionado since the early 90s, I’m surprised I’ve not crossed paths with Somaticae’s wide-angle lenses that cover the entire spectrum I’ve been following for decades. The good news is, we’re tuned in loud and clear.

From sliced technoid bits to more ethereal sound designs and low-end elect-robotics, Somaticae extracts short musical signals across the upper atmosphere with relative ease. And with just a few rotations, one can find a surplus of fluctuating activity on Présent Perpétuel. All short pieces and utterly to the point, these brief soundscapes tend to levitate across a broad sonic spectrum where punchy percussive jolts and stabbing rhythms unfold at multiple angles. With two quadruplet renditions of “Faux Future” and “Quatre fois la même idée,” and two versions of the title track, the artist manages to create unique interpretations that are succinctly abstract, absorbing, and unrelenting.

Présent Perpétuel is available on 3OP. [Bandcamp]
