Sleep Underwriter‘s The Hexadecimal Era makes truly wicked use of classic electronic dance music themes through contemporary production, constructing nine exhilarating cuts that effortlessly traverse electro, braindance and elements of IDM. Packed tight with immaculately programmed beats, deeply delicious synth work and an expansive set of badass, brooding basslines, it forms a complete album that is as dancefloor-ready as it is headphone-friendly.
There’s a genuine sense of electronic music history running through every track. Elements of 80s synth-pop, 90s second-generation electro and nu-school electro-funk and acid intertwine with the more cerebral IDM explorations of the 2000s before embracing the genre-fluid experimentation that has defined the last decade. Rather than sounding nostalgic, Sleep Underwriter fuses these influences into something fresh, confident and unmistakably 3001 in aesthetic.
Inventive sequencing and inspired sound design ::
Opener “Brock” arrives big and bold, while the relentlessly ecstatic “Mud” immediately demonstrates an impressive command of arrangement, layering intricate rhythms and shifting melodic ideas with remarkable precision. Elsewhere, “Ionic Rocket” and “Bow String” channel classic 303 acid lines, reiterating the album’s desire to remain grounded in familiar territory while constantly pushing forward through inventive sequencing and inspired sound design.
My standout, “Tranq Wars,” is a braindance tour de force, its complex time signatures and restless energy creating one of the album’s most enduringly rewarding moments—one I simply can’t stop replaying. Closing track “Rech” completes the journey with incredible emotional weight, where tender, emotive pads and a beautifully cinematic finale feel like the closing credits to an unforgettable, transformative voyage that fully embodies the artist’s vision.
