(05.01.05) I didn’t enjoy the previous Sickboy album that much. It was too much mash up for me; I like it when you sample Andrew WK for a few seconds, but it gets annoying after a while. Into Oblivion is better, even if I have to admit Sickboy is not one of my favorite breakcore artist out there, and I think he’s a bit overrated. I’m not saying he isn’t talented, I only think there are a few other people that deserve more attention. Aside from my own taste, his tunes here are indeed effective and you’ll have serious fun dancing to them.
After a little breakbeat intro you’re pushed towards a wall of breaks and gabba beats, “Heart” is still gentle when compared to the ferocious assault of “Spiral Formation”or “Nomadic Hunters.” Not to mention the absolute killer “Let’s Hear It For The Hardcore,” which is one of the best breakcore tracks I’ve heard in ages without the shadow of a doubt. It’s only that it was already featured on the last Hypnoskull album Dark Skies Over Planet E –since it’s a collaboration between the two artists, so it was no news for me. So, the Sickboy tracks are nice and they do rock, but they are a bit too simple and formulaic, I bet this CD won’t be played for a long time in my stereo. Before buying consider that it’s only 38 minutes long, minus several minutes of silence before the ghost tracks, and minus a tune you could already own if you got the Hypnoskull CD. But if you are a fan of brutal beats and you don’t like too many technicalities, don’t miss this for any reason.
Into Oblivion is out now on Mirex.
