Shit & Cheap ‘Götterdämmerung EP’

[Release page] Shit & Cheap is a brave choice of name by any stretch but not totally unexpected as an oddity from Neil Landstrumm and Mat Consume with this their second release under the moniker. Make no mistake—the oddness doesn’t stop there as this is a pretty far out release combining unique vocal-led psychedelia with bone fide raw electro gutter filth.

“Gin & Haggis” breaks out in a classic tight reverb Bambataa style electro break complete with old skool vocal stabs “huh” and “yeh,” wobbly melodic bass and a deranged lead line. A truly bizarre but excellent cover of The Trashmen’s “Surfin Bird” follows in the guise of “Surfin Mute,” cranking out 303 squelch in a modernist twist on the 1963 surfing classic—a reasonably mental tune in its own right before the Shit & Cheap treatment. “Shadowlands” slows down the tempo with a heavy duty rounded bass lead and Brit inflected vocals announcing “The TV—shows everything, tells nothing. I’m just killing time whilst killing the time”—conjuring up definitive feelings that this is chap who won’t be settling down to watch X-Factor this Saturday night, and quite rightly so too. “Kunst Kunts” closes the EP with an 808 led workout, wonky bleeps, Space Invader effects and further bass wobble excellence.
