Sero’s original is a cold piece of Japanese Telecom electro with just the right amount of old-school electro inserted into the text.
On the back of the excellent Virta (Spammers) release, the Fins behind X0X Records are back, this time with a slab of electro. Sero has been a staple of X0X since 2003, now he has returned with his third EP: Interception System. For this latest 12” fellow Fins Morphology are called in on remix duty, with Dutch electro heavyweight DJ Overdose dishing up two retools.
Sero opens the play with the original. “Interception System” (audio stream below) is a vintage piece of floor filling electro. 808 beats are at the core of this cold spatial piece, with generous breaks coming through the analogue stabs and processed samples. There’s an element of Interdimensional Transmissions to the track laced with some Dominance Electricity, layered through with laconic chords that accentuate the beats and breaks. Overdose steps in with two remixes. The first, the “S.I.S. Remix”, is a low key affair. Subdued chords stalk a sidewalk of crisp beats. The track is similar in tone to some of the earlier Novamen material, stark with a dark edge. The flipside opens with Overdose’s “Poser Remix,” (audio stream below) and it’s fair to say it has a bit more bravado than its predecessor. The beats a upped with a much tougher exterior presented. As in the “S.I.S. Remix,” samples have been done away with the replaced with caliginous synthlines. Morphology are up next. The duo of Diekmann and Turunen have boiled down the original into a sequence of electro beats and impulses. The samples have not escaped the reduction, here being fed a cold computer voice. To round off the record are some DJ tool bonus beats of the original “Interception System.”
Interception System maps out a number of electro styles. Morphology have produced a sleek minimal electro take. Overdose has injected his breakbeat style into Sero’s version whilst offering up a much more downtempo piece. Sero’s original is a cold piece of Japanese Telecom electro with just the right amount of old-school electro inserted into the text. An accomplished piece of electro. There seems to be something in the Finnish water for making this stuff.
