Scarper takes a high-octane approach to his already accelerated exp-electronics trajectory.
A surreal, kinetic, and mind-bending EP
The relatively brief runtime of opener “Wavecrush” demonstrates how Scarper, who explores a wide range of darker peripherals on the Noctis EP, finds solace in distinctive sonic worlds where atmosphere and low-flying synths entwine in a beautiful maze. The multi-talented London-based producer (and Plexus operator) explores downtempo and dub-techno territory with “Metadub,” where its bass lines flow within undulating waves straddling the outer edges. Meanwhile, “Metadome” is a full-throttle drum inferno and blistered-bass-blaster that parallels modern-day Meat Beat Manifesto and D.H.S. tracks—ref. “Aggressive Mantis Squad” from Man From Mantis, Love Love, 2023—and is unquestionably the highlight of the EP. As Scarper takes a high-octane approach to his already accelerated exp-electronics trajectory, closure “Slab” wanders into jungle and harsher rhythms that split at the seams and acts as another formidable force to contend with. A surreal, kinetic, and mind-bending EP.
