Chilled, mid-90s sound-scaping nostalgia
Steve Young (aka Scarper) presents three cuts, sliced and diced with utter precision. It’s electronica that flutters in the wind and holds a torch for early 90s-era melodic compositions with a technoid backdrop. The rave-era bits and bytes that make their way through the title track are calmed by synth switches and subtle squelches as “Hunker Down,” written during the first lockdown of 2020, exudes a fresh and emotive surplus of glitch and breaks which run rampant through faster-paced sonic terrain and drum’n bass glimpses that peel open near its closure. The highlight (for these ears) is the closing track, “Southpaw Slew.” Delivering downtempo frequencies bursting at the seams with chilled, mid-90s sound-scaping nostalgia, Fyretone drafts a parallel with the likes of B12, Sun Electric, Bola, and The Higher Intelligence Agency et al. A solid EP triplet that takes us back, way back.
