Spectral Drift by Sacred Seeds (the solo project of India-based producer Wasim Kozhikode) is an infectious release, comprised mainly of organic sequencing. A series of atmospheric tracks combine synth tones within the sequences, pad melodies and other sonic devices to evoke their intended setting(s). This is a good example of an album composed with synthetic tones that are rendered to resemble natural processes.
The effect resembles sets of sonic analogs of the genetic sequences needed to start new life on an uninhabited planet. If the tracks were reproduced, they might quickly spread until they populated an entire ecosystem. It seems that nature, not well-duplicated using technology, can however be emulated.
The track “Vibrational Balance” reminds me of Steve Roach’s “Possible Planet.” Modulated sequences call to mind a human being’s RNA or DNA. They are miniature odes to a person’s generative blueprints. The tracks call to mind stronger trance and especially psy-trance records. In fact, ambient trance could be a genre associated with Spectral Drift.
The cold, brittle-sounding pulses in “Stellar Planes,” mixed with grand orchestral pad melodies, take us into space—where we orbit Earth for a bit, recording and collecting images of distant stars and other astronomical bodies. In a film, this piece would work well accompanying space travel.
“Portals” ventures into more New Age-y territory. Ethereal melodies combine with quantized sequences. The track is quite tonal, and resembles electronic music from earlier, classic eras such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze.
Highly recommended, engaging, and sonically fulfilling.
