As Hallstreak Foles gathers Quench fans for a taste of atmospheric sonic undulations, it also further reflects on the ever-changing landscape that Funckarma have inhabited for years.
[Release page] Quench returns with a four-track teaser which hopefully signifies more sound crunching from Don and Roel Funcken. With a tag of “three new tracks, one oldie,” it’s pretty clear that the closing track—”Alegria”—is the oldie. Its classic Funckarma charm composed of skittering high-hats, dribbling beats, warm bass and atmospheric flare delves more into Quench aesthetics brought forth on previous releases with U-Cover and n5MD. Where the Funcken brothers tend to create sparks is when the Quench alias takes on a life of its own—lightly brushed ambiences and melodic undercurrents working in synergy. On Hallstreak Foles there’s a slight shift in space where added wobbles fluctuate as they take center stage—it’s an unfolding smorgasbord of three monikers rolled into one (Funckarma, Quench and the solo injections of Roel Funcken’s flickering dub-jazz). Evident on “Skone Branner,” the skimming pulsars of light bounce against textured percussion as ambient debris falls by the wayside. “Drecha” bursts with colorful shapeshifting, smoldering bass manipulations and fluttering patches of beatwork—it unravels with careful doses of dubstep, drone and rhythm-bending in its short duration. As Hallstreak Foles gathers Quench fans for a taste of atmospheric sonic undulations, it also further reflects on the ever-changing landscape that Funckarma have inhabited for years.
