Mollycoddlers is one of those releases that doesn’t attempt to be the life of the party with gimmicks and tricks. It is more interested in bringing the goods via the way of well-crafted songs full of off-kilter melodics and solid beats.
Patscan (aka Pat Hime) Mollycoddlers is one of those releases that doesn’t attempt to be the life of the party with gimmicks and tricks. It is more interested in bringing the goods via the way of well-crafted songs full of off-kilter melodics and solid beats. Upon listening to Mollycoddlers, I am immediately reminded of Warp stalwarts Plaid as a point of reference. This is especially apparent in “Fidimiddl” and the electro tinged “Skipsyn.” On “Prittipolli,” whispered voices and bits of white noise swim between the four to the floor beats. At times the beats flirt with drum’n bass tempos as is the case with the excellent “Boxydroplyn” and the slow building opener “Mollicodl.” While the tempos may go up in these tracks, the melodies are preserved and they still maintain a high sense of balance. Rounding itself out with the beatless “Shivlry”—a track full of frequency modulated melodies—Patscan has produced a wonderful release and I look forward to his future output.
