Nautilis :: Fiasco EP (Systorm)

A 7inch with total funk appeal glued to 70’s funk is realized on Systorm’s latest release. Four relatively short tracks spread out over a retro-electronic feel are casually molded to abstract beauty and Super_Collider styled lyrics. With excelling production on this release, Fiasco maintains its roots by creating a field of relaxed grooves that casually slide into your heartstrings. Following an untitled 7″ with Planet-Mu, Skyler (aka Nautilis) isn’t your average IDM-funkster. A cover song for “Rhythm is a Dancer” is constructed with a karoke sung lyrics while a low-fi bassline slips between the high notes. The second track on the A-side “Let Your Guard Down” is probably the most original track on this 7″. A downbeat, heavy solo-percussion bass rhythm soulfully moves into precisely maneuvered lyrics (much in line with Safety Scissors, minus the experimental lo-end punch). With many sub-genre’s popping up in the electronic spectrum such as clip-hop, bleep-hop, snip-hop et cetera, it’s nice to listen to a record that actually falls into none of those headings. Abstract funk, dope, chill-out, groove, lo-beat, downbeat, lounge.. all these terms can easily be applied to Nautilis’ debut release with Systorm. Not to be classified under “experimental electronics”, “idm and/or ambient” as a few previous Systorm releases may be classified under. Nautilis clearly realizes that putting the soul into music can be just as important as releasing it to the public for listening pleasure. Sit back, relax, and feel the rhythms flowing from this funky-7″ record.
