This 3-pack of interpretations reveals just the right amount of sonic flexibility moving from the erratic beatwork of Lukid to the full-throttle crunched techno of Lone and the distilled calm of the “Coda” remix. Perfectly paced and meant to be played on repeat.
[Release page] Nathan Fake’s Steam Days (Border Community, 2012) opened up with the fuzzy electrical patchwork of “Paean”—a swirling kaleidoscope of sonic colors and contours. This pristine remix package features three alterations including remix support from Lukid and Lone with a tranquilized “Coda” version to offset the flow.
It’s a challenge not to relate this EP (especially Lukid’s remix) to the early works of Skam’s MASK series of vinyl compilations—raw layers of organized electrical distortions, a cacophony of heavy bass and percussive eruptions cycle through a haze of fragmented syncopation. Lone takes a different approach as a “Nlogax” (ref. Boards Of Canada’s High Scores EP, Skam 1999) feel bursts onto the landscape whereby 4/4-centric percussion is elevated by pulsing spheres of technoid bliss. The “Coda” interlude is a brisk seventy-two second stream of ambient subconsciousness that breaks the flow of its adjacent slices of electronics in serene fashion. Overall, this 3-pack of interpretations reveals just the right amount of sonic flexibility moving from the erratic beatwork of Lukid to the full-throttle crunched techno of Lone and the distilled calm of the “Coda” remix. Perfectly paced and meant to be played on repeat.
