Crack a Light is a sensory experience, very much crafted to achieve the most sonic of experiences. Often sparkling in a glacial, crystal-like wonder, and sometimes shaded with a haunted speculation.

A blizzard of sounds building amongst a swirling of viridian

Native of Brasília, Bruno Sres is a sound artist recording under the moniker MYMK. Sres has released four albums since 2015, incorporating melody and structure, delivered through processed instrumentation and filtered electronics. Crack a Light is a sensory experience, very much crafted to achieve the most sonic of experiences. Often sparkling in a glacial, crystal-like wonder, and sometimes shaded with a haunted speculation.

A dramatic shaft of cutting electro that is almost piercing gives way to opener “Dandelion;” a medieval metallic highly polished image. Space and texture are blended with the utmost simplicity that ultimately has the power to divide lands and shine a sacred shaft of light on the way forward. It progresses with “Like All Mornings,” advancing and casting a spell made up of enigmatic sounds that are vapor like, drifting their way along, filling out slightly and giving off a ghostly image that is further punctuated by definite bass-like steps. “A Gesture” showcases more sounds in a similar vein to “Dandelion,” and again, it is metallic in texture but as fluid as sea water rushing through organ pipes.

In places, it presents choppy storm like clouds—with a chopper heading through the dark inversions and battling against a harsh atmosphere, not least, very evident on “Antics.” Occasionally its aloof, a frontier that is as challenging as it is mysterious. “Pay No Mind” holds the delicacy of silk adorned with Japanese watercolor its colorful spray giving off a majesty that could adorn a temple. Then, in complete contrast comes “Auroras” with its sub-zero frozen vibrancy, set in its way, an element that is at one with its surroundings yet threatens with a harsh overtone—a blizzard of sounds building amongst a swirling of viridian. To give release to a more ferocious adventure are the Star Wars like lasers of “Salamander.”

Many themes are evident throughout the album in one aspect or another. It often plays out to natural history with carefully blended, dramatic, serene, playful and sometimes discreet sensations before venturing into dramatic air waves, and sometimes playing across hostile environments—always fine, almost undetected contrast between the ephemeral and the immortal.
