Chris Doria’s debut full-length album on 2Playermusic has finally unleashed itself for the world to consume. And it’s about time too, considering that this talented Southern California based producer has had 4 other releases, and we’re only just beginning to really appreciate the depth of his work. Perhaps best described as a cross-pollination of Squarepusher’s jazzy, drill and bass inflections, Aphex Twin’s abstract emotional tweakers, and Muziq’s melodically enriched broken jungle, My Kill Jack’s On is a newer direction for Chris as he plunges straight into audio ecstasy. Namedropping simply doesn’t do justice though, as the sounds that persist on this 10-track album are truly unique, fresh and invigorating. Taking equal parts breaks, drum’n bass and adding to it a peculiar amount of jazzy funk and punchy rhythms, Milk Beast’s Lullaby delivers snappy analog frequencies next to playful, energetic grooves. Without highlighting any one particular track, it’s safe to say that an album of this caliber wouldn’t be out of place on labels such as Planet-Mu, Warp and even Skam for that matter. My Kill Jack’s On offers some of the finest all encompassing synth-structures while laying the blueprints for the next generation of skittering electric distortions in sound innovation. Impressive!
