Microfilm :: O/V/N/I (Self Released)

After several dreamy ups and downs, in the end, artists Matthew Mercer and Matt Keppel are on to something; something almost cinematic.

An exciting and ambitious project

O/V/N/I (aka the Romance languages’ acronym for “UFO”), is the 7th studio album by the Portland, Oregon electronic duo Microfilm—Matthew Mercer and vocalist Matt Keppel. The album opens herself up like slowly like a shining light when a male voice asks us if we are ready to begin. “Emojiless,” a sparse, simple, almost funky beat with clips accompanied by long sweeping synth tones and a robot counts with us. The male vocal lets us know that no emoji can control him. This reminiscent of the Late 70s/early 80s “simple” synth equipment—love that throwback sound. Then the party is over and we are back in an instrumental that sweeps us away to the next part of the journey. As the title explains, “We’ve Left Earth This Morning, After Breakfast.” With 16 tracks, this is an exciting and ambitious project. After several dreamy ups and downs, in the end, artists Matthew Mercer and Matt Keppel are on to something; something almost cinematic. I can hear track 16, “All Cats are Grey,” in a film or accompanying some visual art. Overall, a great release and I’m excited to see these artists produce more.
