A myriad of sonic temptations
Our editor-in-chief Pietro invited me to contribute to Igloo Magazine back in May of 2021. For those that caught the sites extensive EOY list probably caught a handful that we did not get to review—it is an impossible task to get to write about all the great music, so whilst it may seem overwhelming, I’d say it is worth taking a punt on something in there that perhaps hasn’t been reviewed (we link to the Bandcamp release page in place of the article). One that I entered to the EOY pantheon, which came out before I joined the Igloo team was Belgium based Maoupa Mazzocchetti and their maximalist genre pushing LP UXY Dosing©.
‘…sound productions that make for a radical succession to the minimalist genre, regardless of style and aesthetic practice though mainly associated with the field of sound arts. More precisely, it designates that which embraces heterogeneity and allows for complex systems of juxtapositions and collisions, in which all outside influences are viewed as potential raw material. However, UD relies more on singular experimentation rather than the addition of musical characteristics attached to specific genres. Subsequently, UXY Dosing© gives birth to MDM (Maximal Dance Music) which, beyond a sole matter of genre, remains linked to the high consumption of dextrose associated with milk, which de facto shares the same acronym as MDM (Maximal Dextrose & Milk). I absolutely loved this release. It is hard hitting and exposed Mazzocchetti’s fearless take on peak energized dance music. Aggressive in terms of futuristic layout and design, notions of sensory overload were often on a tipping point—it is an exciting listen! A year on and we are finally being treated to a follow up, in this case an expansion on the initial with UXY Dosing© Vol.2 (Nine Tracks Unselected by Judaah).
Baring only a 30-minute stint over the course of 9-tracks, what Mazzocchetti shortens in duration, is overcome by their exert in a myriad of sonic temptations that build in momentum as each track unloads. The curation in order gives this volume a very live set feel; delicate openings “Moonification,” featuring Vica Pacheco (check out her Wabi-Sabi tapes release Fibre-Fusion I reviewed last year), all the way through the frantic breaks and curiously quirky “Bagpipe Contest in the DJ Booth”—there is a stamina that puts you through this workout of a release whist showcasing Mazzocchetti’s intent to be divisive in unconventional takes on traits we might familiar within our maximalist styles.
Highlights also include a haunting deconstructed version of Aaliyah’s 2000 hit “Try Again,” this take featuring Mika Oki under the lyrical title “Don’t Succeed.”
