An epic adventure full of unpredictable twists of which you are the amazed witness
The Italian label Haunter Records highlighted its 2021 return with surely one of the most astonishing albums of the year: LEGENDO, signed by the Polish artist Lutto Lento. An epic adventure full of unpredictable twists of which you are the amazed witness.
The rhythmic construction of the percussive tracks is a particularly notable achievement: very few pads are used, or very softly; thus, the guitar tones of Mortal Fools and Iskiereczka or the attacked synths of “VERSION Epilogue” and “POND” play a role as rhythmic as it is melodic. Drum lines are complex and rich and are made of numerous percussions. Lutto Lento mainly used a syncope construction, except for the only live track of the album which offers a straight drum groove of the most contagious energy ever. The slick and impactful synths of “VERSION Epilogue” and “Horned Heart” play with assurance their epic role and the use of field recordings in almost every track creates an obvious cinematographic ambiance: footsteps in the depth of a dark cave, breakings of waves on the shore, screams of seagulls in the sky, crackles of the fire in the middle of a plain.
Above all, it is the readable narration that surprises the most during the listening of LEGENDO. Tracks follow one another as the chapter of a novel, each of them telling the occurrence of a spectacular plot of a rare intensity—the antithesis of stability. The told story is madly dynamic, with its respective peaks and contemplative sections. The different track structures are perfect examples of these energy variations. They switch between perfectly linear (“Intro,” “Mortal Fools,” “Wheel,” “Fern Flowers”) and completely unpredictable (“VERSION Epilogue,” “Skarby Sezamu,” “Horned Heart,” “Untitled”). It is a legendary epopee. A rewriting of Ulysse Odyssey. the kind of story you want to hear in the dark, enlightened by the trembling light of one unique candle, fantasizing about unreachable horizons.
Hero stories include their quietude moments. “Mortal Fools” represents the joy of innocence while “Fern Flowers” is the euphoria of a safe and sound end. A happy crowd walking, like a gratitude reward, is offered by “POND” and its raw rock drumkit. A feeling of insurance which lead to fear with “Wheel” and its haunted tones and textures. It is the moment of all the doubts after the first battle success told by “VERSION Epilogue.” This track marks the entrance of powerful and crushing synths. It is wonderfully structured by Lutto Lento: we are led to a climax by a rhythmic crescendo; follows an interlude worthy of a classical orchestra which conveys a satisfying feeling of accomplishment. A siren is wailing, a glass is broken. We are held in suspense for good.
In this epopee, we also meet characters with strong personalities. The repellent ghoul in “Excerpt” and “Iskiereczka,” broken by the usury of time and carrier of bad omen. The wise in “Skarby Sezamu”: the old man of millennial experience who and teaches the words made to defeat the threatening gods. “I know know”. And then we meet these gods. Sirens shaped gods, in the middle of the sea, singing to seduce and screaming to kill. “Horned Heart” is the recital of this ultimate assault, the indisputable apogee of an album which etch a legend deep in our mind.
This climax is stunning. Even the gorgeous complaint of the electric guitar of “Intro,” announcer of an extraordinary and painful tale, hasn’t prepared us enough for this stroke. This album is a masterclass of composition and deserves all the awards for being the best score of our imagination.
