Kid606 :: The Soccergirl EP (Carpark)

A departure from the usual “indie-punk with a Mac” glitch and click/gabber style results in this very pretty, if short, EP from Kid 606. Ripped up computer tones and bass washes float around dreamily, with more than a hint of tenderness in the air. Maybe this is what the Kid sounds like when he’s in love?

There are equal parts Kraftwerk and Autechre/Aphex Twin influences adrift here, but it’s not an imitation of those styles. It’s a nice, relaxing trip, and achieves a compelling blend of melody and non-traditional song structure without being obnoxiously overpowering. The disc highlight is the happy chimes and bouncy rhythms of the ridiculously titled fourth track “If My Heart Ran Away…” and “Thank You For Being My Angel,” which almost sounds like a continuing evolution from the previous piece. They’re also the longest tracks, so they acheive the most coheisive flow out of the entire bunch.

The one complaint is that it’s too short, clocking in at only a little over 18 minutes, but that’s what EPs are for. Definitely worth picking up.
