Oh yeah. This is fun stuff. More Powerbook madness, remixed and beaten into the digital ground, featuring so much of that fun extreme timestretching and insane tempo changes which makes this current crop of [insert preferred genre name here] so maddeningly enjoyable. This should be bought for the first track alone, “Catstep/my kitten/catnap-vatstep dsp remix” by Hrvatski, which sounds like u-ziq backed by the old Amiga text-to-voice program Dr. Sbaitzo singing an ode to Kid 606’s coolness.
The entire collection is not all wacky beats over cool Reaktor noodlings, however. Aube makes an appearance with his usual style of noise, though with a heavy tip towards chunky digital clicks, and “The Rapture vs Kid 606- Notes…” is a funpunk cutup to sing along to. Much of what appears on Kid 606 And Friends is most obviously heavily influenced by the Autechre-ish style of IDM melody-writing, but it’s got a nice flavor all its own, especially if you enjoy the time-streching artifacts induced by heavy digital abuse of sound files.
