Lost In The Game confronts new sonic bed fellows for this artist—namely emotion, melody and and a new found introspection. Many of the tracks sit at hip-hop tempo and work an absolute treat coupled with Kid606’s emotive, melancholic chord progressions.
[Soundcloud Release page] I must admit to having often dismissed Kid606 as being part of the banging grime-core fraternity and for the hard crew only. Indeed, there’s some pretty terrifying and noisy material in Miguel Trost De Pedro’s vast back catalog but Lost In The Game confronts new sonic bed fellows for this artist—namely emotion, melody and and a new found introspection.
There’s a tinge of 80’s shoegaze synth that permeates much of this release alongside distorted motif’s that bounce with a gentle sidechain compressed lope. He’s not afraid of the occasional Big Synth Line either—a few crop up alongside gentle sweet melodics which sweep across tracks like “Gimme summer” and “Cardamon’s gone soft.” That’s not to say things don’t sound bang up to date—hints of snappy Trap-style percussion work and ace sub abuse on “Night Club vs Book Club” and “New boss same as old boss” keep things decidedly fresh.
Many of the tracks sit at hip-hop tempo and work an absolute treat coupled with Kid606’s emotive, melancholic chord progressions. “I want to join a cult” and “I need to join a cult” are not just entertainingly titled but killer emotionally tinged pieces of work with a sublimely modulated lead soaring through the latter and pensively epic widescreen pads and booming bass across the former.
I’ve had Lost In The Game pretty much on repeat for two days now and think it’s fair to say I’ve re-evaluated my original views on Kid606.
This is a cracking release and marks an interesting departure for this prolific producer.
Thoroughly recommended for fans of epic, melodic, downtempo twilight works.
