John Heckle 'Hard Sleeper/Ancient Deep'

[Release page] The aged sound of House is being donned by the youth of today. John Heckle is close becoming the darling child of the House revival. When Z-Factor were first hitting ears, Mr Heckle was but a thought. It was only when Bam Bam was chanting “Where’s Your Child” and Mike Dunn proclaimed “Let It Be House” that John was just dreaming of solids. Heckle is a young buck but with a slick DJ hand, a tight live set and a spread of quality records he is seriously turning heads.. Heckle’s raw, almost coarse, take on House has captured interest from labels like Mathematics and Tabernacle Records. For his latest EP, Hard Sleeper/Ancient Deep, the Merseysider has taken a wee trip north to Newcastle’s Signals for some ten inches of wax.

The analogue aquatics of “Hard Sleeper” opens the 10-inch. The track brings together elements of Detroit techno and lies them beside a J.T.C. House motif. The rawness of the Tabernacle record is filleted, Heckle balancing hi-hats with some wonderful paddy chords. “Acient Deep” steps out with a more House shaped visage. The beats and bass echo the bawdiness of Trax Records, but the melody mirrors a modern take on Chicago mechanics.

It is almost unfair to dub John Heckle a House artist. Heckle adopts aspects of techno into his sound, introspectives of industrial and colours of ambient into his music. Second Son showcased the Liverpudlian’s diverse style, and this two tracker from the Toon echoes Heckle’s variety. With every release, every gig and every mix, John Heckle is gaining a firmer following. With solid tracks like these it’s pretty understandable.
