A unique piece of architecture
Grainophonics by Interconnected on Móatún 7 is at heart a study in minimalist drone/ambient music with occasional rhythmic episodes that give the album a slightly glitchy and psychedelic element. It’s actually been quite a while since I’ve listened to this sort of deep, introspective ambient style drone music. It seemed that around the 2006-2010 sort of period, lots of producers from different genres, alongside new producers who were under the misconception that it was an easy way into electronic music, became involved in the scene and ultimately diluted it. So I drifted away. This really is quite an epic album. There’s even hints of Pink Floyd in the slow burning beauty titled “Mystery of Being,” which is a genuinely fantastic slice of electronic music.
Each track on Grainophonics is like a unique piece of architecture. You know from listening that a lot of time has been devoted to each sound, and it’s undoubtedly been a labor of love. This comes across to the listener via the depth and fluidity of each track. The highlights are the deeply ambient pieces that lack the rhythmic episodes mentioned earlier. While I do enjoy these pieces, they do not contain the same resonance and depth. That’s not a slight on the album, more people most likely prefer these atmospheric moments—I’m simply speaking from a personal perspective.
From a technical viewpoint Grainophonics sounds fantastic and if you have a decent set of headphones then it becomes a truly immersive experience which I’ve no doubt was the intention of the artists (a collaboration between Bakis Sirros and Ingo Zobel—both of whom are top notch producers.)
The stand outs are the already mentioned “Mystery of Being,” “Structured by Airwaves,” “Evolving Reality,” and “Grains of Emotion,” however, you really should listen to this one from start to finish. It’s a beauty.
