Every once in a while it’s magnificent to hear an artist that recognizes the value of an intelligently composed—and dare we say fun?—dance track.
“Head-banging” is actually quite a good phrase to describe Hosmoz’ first album Fading Mechanisms. An amazingly cocky and brazen work, filled with tracks such as “Vulva (LP edit)” and “Underground My Ass,” Fading Mechanisms pretty much says Hosmoz is not trying to take himself very seriously. Like Mogwai, his track titles do not quite reflect the content hidden inside.
The track names would merely be an empty provocation were it not for the tunes. Hosmoz has the arsenal to back up his arrogance and for once it is great to hear a confident approach to IDM, given that so many artists just seem to wander around helplessly, looking for the next random sound to fill the track with. Fading Mechanisms is composed of thirteen solid, sometimes magnificent, tracks and three remixes that manage to rework Hosmoz compositions with the same audacity of its maker.
With Fading Mechanisms, Hosmoz has reminded us that the genre has not lost its emphasis in dance. IDM might be correctly stigmatized for arrogance, and rendering all other dance music “idiotic” or “simple minded” by default, but every once in a while it’s magnificent to hear an artist that recognizes the value of an intelligently composed—and dare we say fun?—dance track.
